President Donald Trump is asking former U.S. Rep. Billy Long to step down less than two months after Long's confirmation as Internal Revenue Service commissioner .
The New York Times first reported the news, which has been confirmed by other outlets including USA TODAY , the Associated Press and Reuters . As of 3:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, Long was still listed as the current commissioner on the IRS website .
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will temporarily serve as acting commissioner, USA TODAY reported, and Long is expected to be nominated to an ambassadorship.
Prior to Long's confirmation, there were five acting IRS commissioners in 2025 .
