Local organizations overseeing the land of the former ASARCO lead smelting plant in East Helena received an award from the Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday for their work redeveloping the previously contaminated area.
ASARCO Redevelopment representatives accepted a Phoenix Award, given to organizations that engage their community in contamination restoration. The award was given at the National Brownfields Conference in Chicago, according to a news release.
The Montana Environmental Trust Group (METG), the city of East Helena, East Helena Public Schools, Prickly Pear Land Trust, Helena Area Habitat for Humanity and Oakland Companies were recognized for their work on restoring this brownfields development.
