If there is one take away from the annual presentation by Denison Mines is that Elliot Lake water is very safe.

Operations manager Marc Prevost, who provided the update at the July 28 council meeting, said even though the mines have been deco

mmissioned and closed for over 25 years, the care and maintenance is ongoing.

“We manage the water, we manage the dams and we manage all the maintenance.”

The mine sites are heavily regulated by two bodies – the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks.

Both agencies visit the site at least once a year and the CNSC actually do their own water samples and send them to their own labs. “And make sure that they’re getting the exact same results as us.”
