Native artistry is the center of the annual Red Magic Art Festival , Aug. 10 at Jackson Park, but the vibe is less crafts fair and more block party, says creator Harmony Hill . There are also musicians, dance troupes, aerialists, art activities, cultural traditions and more. Hill started the festival in 2020 to support Native artists and their diverse practices and disciplines.
“Native Americans are not a monolith,” she says. “People tend to think of just beadwork and dreamcatchers, and I wanted to showcase the variety.” Silversmiths, stone carvers, moccasin makers and apparel designers are among the vendors, and Hill encourages attendees to ask them questions. “It’s a nice way to spend a day, and you’re going to learn and broaden your horizons.”
