Congressional redistricting is more than just changing lines on a map. It’s a battle for political influence and control.

What began as a special session focusing on relief for victims of the July 4 flooding in Central Texas has evolved into a fierce fight over congressional redistricting as Republicans attempt to secure control of the U.S. House of Representatives at the behest of President Donald Trump.

And the Rio Grande Valley appears to be in the crosshairs, according to a proposed congressional map unveiled by Texas Republicans on July 30 that has only added fuel to the fire.

Trump has tasked Gov. Greg Abbott with acquiring five congressional seats in the state.
