COLUMBUS, Ohio — As Columbus continues to grow, city leaders say they remain focused on expanding public safety services, but budget decisions are raising concerns about whether that commitment is keeping pace with need.

Mayor Andrew Ginther has long said public safety is his top priority. In recent years, the city has consistently budgeted for three new training classes annually for both police officers and firefighters . But this year, only one fire class has been approved.

On Thursday, 44 new recruits officially joined the Columbus Division of Fire during a graduation ceremony marked by tradition and pride, including bagpipes and chants from the graduates.
