Federal judges ruled Thursday that Alabama must continue using a court-ordered congressional map through the end of the decade but declined to put the state back under a key part of the Voting Rights Act.

The decision maintains the current map, which established a second district where Black voters are a majority or near-majority, for upcoming elections. However, it leaves the door open for changes after 2030, when the Republican-led Alabama Legislature will once again be able to redraw the map without court supervision.
