GULFPORT, Miss. (WLOX) - Gulfport roads, including Palmer Drive and Canal Street, are being ripped up.
Crews are removing the crumbling and cracked concrete roads and replacing them with asphalt.
“We’re not necessarily set up to maintain those well,” said Public Works Director Tyler Gentry. “They were built years ago, and some of them are not in great condition.”
Gentry said concrete roads last longer than asphalt when installed correctly, but upkeep is a challenge. Convenience, time, and money all play a factor.
“You don’t necessarily have potholes that you can just go patch,” said Gentry. “You have to go out and replace sections of concrete that have to sit there overnight, the roads have to be closed, and it is more expensive than maintaining an asphalt street.”
