HAZARD, Ky. (WYMT) - Summer interns with the Appalachian Arts Alliance spent the last day of their internship unveiling a mural in downtown Hazard.
The artwork is displayed on a wall behind The Grand.
Students said this mural has a special meaning and is dedicated to former teachers from a school that closed long ago in Hazard.
“We found out that Liberty Street High was a segregated part of Hazard and Liberty Street. The school, Liberty High, their mascot was the dragons,” intern, Wolfframmina Day said. “We really wanted to have the idea of having them come into Hazard instead of still being segregated out.“
The students researched, interviewed, and learned about the school.
“We got the colors down. We went to Perry County Library. We researched as much as we could about the school,”
