WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A federal grand jury has indicted a man in connection with a deadly shooting that targeted Israeli Embassy staffers following a diplomatic event, and federal prosecutors say hate was at the heart of the crime, the U.S. Justice Department announced this week .

Elias Rodriguez, who was initially charged by complaint in May, now faces federal charges including murder of a foreign official, hate crimes, firearms offenses, first-degree murder and assault with intent to kill, according to the DOJ.

The indictment says that on May 21, Rodriguez attended a Young Diplomats Reception hosted by the American Jewish Committee (AJC) at the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C. Among the attendees were Israeli Embassy staff members Yaron Lischinsky, Sarah Milgrim, and two other
