A building that has stood in the centre of Sudbury for 75 years is coming down.

“For many residents, the building behind me holds a special place in their hearts,” said Greater Sudbury Mayor Paul Lefebvre at a press conference next to the former Sudbury General Hospital building on Paris Street Friday morning. “It was a symbol of care.”

The building, however, has been vacant since 2010 and has become a hazard, on top of being an eyesore.

Lefebvre announced that a demolition permit sought by the building’s owner, Panoramic Properties Inc. of Niagara Falls, had just been officially issued by the city hours earlier in the day.
