A person opened fire late this afternoon near the campus of Emory University in Atlanta and the headquarters of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, prompting warnings from officials to shelter in place and avoid the area, authorities said.

Officials reported an active shooter just after 5 p.m. ET at a CVS store on Clifton Road, which is directly across from the main entrance to the CDC headquarters.

Police officials said that there was a single shooter, who is dead. A law enforcement officer was injured and has been hospitalized.

Pictures shared by workers showed the windows of CDC buildings that appeared to have been struck by gunfire. The CDC did not immediately comment.
