DALLAS — After Texas Democrats left the state in 2021 to stall a vote on legislation that would change election law, Republicans responded by enacting tougher penalties.
The Texas Democrats who left the state in 2025 now face fines of $500 every day that they’re gone. And it is getting expensive for them.
As expected, many Republicans are once again calling for more extreme punishment to prevent future quorum breaks and state Rep. Shelley Luther, R-District 62, revealed they are considering just that.
“This hasn’t dropped yet, but I have heard that they could lose their seniority, parking spots, chairmanships. I think that’s next on the books,” the Republican told us on Inside Texas Politics .
Elected last year, this is Representative Luther’s first year in the Texas Legislature.
