ATLANTA — A suspected shooter is dead and one police officer has been injured following an active shooter incident near Emory University and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on Friday. Authorities confirmed that there is no longer a threat to the public.

Emory University announced on social media that the shelter-in-place order for the campus has been lifted, but advised individuals to avoid the area. Employees at the CDC reported that bullets struck the windows of several buildings on the campus.

Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr expressed concern, stating, “We’re horrified by the news out of Emory University and praying for the safety of the entire campus community.”

The incident began around 6 p.m. when a warning siren sounded repeatedly near the Emory and CDC campuses. The area, known for its affluent wooded neighborhoods, is located in northwest Atlanta along Clifton Road. Typically congested with traffic, the streets were relatively clear on Friday evening.

Staff at a nearby deli, General Muir, locked their doors and took cover inside. Brandy Giraldo, the deli's chief operating officer, described the scene, saying, “It sounded like fireworks going off, one right after the other.”

Governor Brian Kemp commended the first responders for their swift actions. He remarked, “Twice this week, deranged criminals have targeted innocent Georgians. Each time, brave first responders rushed toward the danger to subdue the shooter and save lives, reminding us of just how crucial they are.”

This incident follows another shooting earlier in the week at Fort Stewart, highlighting ongoing concerns about gun violence in the state.
