SKOWHEGAN, Maine — You can drive or walk through just about any town or city in Maine and find at least one public park.

But none of them will have what Skowhegan’s new river park will offer: direct access to whitewater rapids.

"We'll have an overhang out over the river over here and eventually stairs down to the river as well," Main Street Skowhegan president Kristina Cannon explained while walking beside Skowhegan's riverfront.

Now cleared for construction along the Kennebec River, this riverfront park is part of a vision that’s been more than 20 years in the making.

“We’re doing what we can to make the river really a focal point and the heart of our community,” Cannon said.
