STRATFORD, Connecticut (WABC) -- The body of a 6-year-old boy who fell into a river in Connecticut was found on Friday.

Stratford Police say the boy's body was found floating in the Housatonic River by civilian boaters around 2 p.m.

They say the child was found about one half-mile south from where he fell into the river while walking on the Birdseye Street Boat Ramp around 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday.

Stratford and Bridgeport police marine units were on scene to remove the boy's body from the water.

The exact circumstances are still under investigation, but the child's mother was with him at the time.

A United Illuminating employee jumped into the river in an attempt to save him on Wednesday, but was unsuccessful.
