COLUMBUS, Ohio — The VFW is coming home to Columbus as Friday marks the beginning of the 126th National Convention in the place where it all began. The Veterans of Foreign Wars first gathered in Columbus as a way to stay connected decades ago.

But this convention marks more than a gathering. It also marks a change in leadership that is breaking barriers.

Incoming Commander-In-Chief Carol Whitmore will be the first woman to ever helm the VFW. She will be sworn in during this week’s convention.

It’s a pivotal moment for the organization amid a changing landscape for veterans across the country.
