Russian volunteers were shown saving Steller sea lions from fishing nets on Tyuleny Island off the coast of Russia's Far East, in a Russian state TV report aired on Friday.

Due to active fishing in the area, the animals are at risk of becoming entangled in nets, causing injury and even death.

The volunteers spent nine days on the island and helped around 83 marine mammals.

Tyuleny Island is a small uninhabited island in the Sea of Okhotsk housing Russia's largest reproductive rookery of Steller sea lions, according to the Rossiya 1 broadcaster.

Ships are not allowed to approach the island by any closer than 30 miles and must blow their horns, while aircrafts can't fly over it.
