We have reached peak abundance in the Okanagan right now, so there’s no excuse not to eat local. The orchard trees are heavily laden with fruit, and gardens and fields are producing an abundant supply of peppers, onions, beans, zucchini, cucumbers, leafy greens, corn and tomatoes. And the plump and plentiful wine grapes this year are in full veraison mode promising a juicy harvest, and maybe – just maybe – a great vintage.

I have taken to tomatoes in particular this month. Their varieties, colours, sizes and shapes are irresistible and their deep flavours are so welcome, especially after the pale approximation known as 'Hot House'.
