Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo is “in the process” of activating the Nevada National Guard to support federal immigration enforcement in a “temporary, administrative capacity,” according to his spokesperson Elizabeth Ray.

The National Guard will be deployed for weeks to aid in work that is not public-facing, a member of the governor’s office told the Sun, meaning they won’t be directly involved in immigration enforcement activity. The federal government will be funding the work, they said.

State Sen. Fabian Doñate, a Democrat member of the Nevada Latino Legislative Caucus, called Lombardo’s move a “profound betrayal of the trust of our communities.”
