Tarik Skubal has set a high bar for himself.

That's why Friday night at Comerica Park felt so strange. The Tigers' ace didn't make it through five innings for the first time all season, leaving after Mike Trout's chopper up the middle rolled past the mound in the fifth. Skubal's line: 4 2/3 innings, four runs on six hits, two walks and six strikeouts against the Angels.

It snapped a remarkable streak.

The reigning American League Cy Young winner had 22 consecutive starts of at least five innings that stretched back to June 19, 2024 , when Skubal also went just four against Atlanta. For a pitcher averaging more than six innings per start this season and owning the AL's best ERA going into the game, coming out before five is the rarest of events.
