SAN FRANCISCO -- In the wake of his first Trade Deadline as the Giants’ president of baseball operations, Buster Posey insisted he was not abandoning hopes for a playoff spot despite trading his closer, primary setup man and right fielder.

The team is doing its darnedest to make their boss look smart, improving to 5-2 since the Deadline with Friday night’s 5-0 victory against the Nationals, their first win at Oracle Park in four weeks.

The Giants carried an eight-game home losing streak into the opener of a six-game homestand, one short of setting a San Francisco record.

Rafael Devers homered in a two-run first inning against right-hander Jake Irvin, Casey Schmitt finished Irvin with a two-run, moon-scraping homer in the sixth, and two rookies contributed in different ways.
