GREEN BAY — Back when Brian Gutekunst got into the pro football scouting realm nearly 30 years ago as a fresh-faced kid from UW-La Crosse, both Pro Football Hall of Fame general manager Ron Wolf and eventual successor Ted Thompson had far more to work with when it came to making decisions about the Green Bay Packers’ roster.
That’s not to say that Wolf, who arrived in 1991 and whose last draft was in 2001, or Thompson, who was Wolf’s right-hand man in the late 1990s and was Gutekunst’s predecessor as GM after a tenure that ran from 2005 through 2017, were always right on their evaluations. But they certainly had more opportunities to formulate opinions on their players.
Not only were there upwards of 50 practices a summer (including two-a-days for much of camp), but there were a minimum
