A stretch of the M6 is closed after a lorry overturned, spilling oil on the carriageway in Staffordshire.

The serious crash happened on the northbound carriageway between junctions J14 Stafford and J15 Stoke-on-Trent at about 10.30pm.

Motorists were briefly trapped in the road closure while all emergency services responded before being released.

The motorway has remained closed for nearly 12 hours after the HGV spilt oil, causing severe traffic delays in the area on approach.

The lorry driver escaped the collision uninjured, and no other vehicles were involved, the police confirmed.

However, the road is likely to remain closed most of the morning for resurfacing works.
