SAN DIEGO — Red Sox backup catcher Connor Wong drove in more runs with one swing Friday than he had recorded all season.
He ripped a bases-clearing three-run double against Padres reliever Sean Reynolds during the eighth inning of Boston’s 10-2 win at Petco Park . He entered that at-bat with just two RBIs all year.
It also snapped his 0-for-30 streak with runners in scoring position.
“Obviously, it’s been a struggle, so it’s just really being able to enjoy that one,” Wong said. “Try and build off of it.”
Wong’s performance comes at a crucial time for the Red Sox, as their starting catcher has been sidelined. No. 1 catcher Carlos Narváez has not played since Tuesday because of a sore knee. It appears Narváez likely will avoid the IL as Cora said he probably will return to the li
