BIG SKY — Nearly halfway through a six-year water quality study focusing on dozens of miles of the Gallatin River for excessive algal growth, the Department of Environmental Quality said that current data shows no indication of excessive nutrients causing the blooms.

That finding was one of several updates shared recently, when scientists and researchers from the DEQ, Gallatin River Task Force, Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology, and Montana State University gathered for an open house-style presentation. The event offered a look at what the study has uncovered so far, and what questions remain unanswered.
