The Atlanta Braves starting rotation is taking a step in the right direction, as Chris Sale is set to begin a rehab assignment next week. Sale is slated to pitch in Triple-A Gwinnett on August 12.

Sale’s absence, stemming from a fractured left rib cage sustained during a diving play on June 18, has been a significant blow, contributing to a rotation depleted by injuries across the board. At the time of his injury, he was in peak form, posting a 1.23 ERA over his previous 10 starts, lowering his season ERA to 2.52.

Injuries have destroyed the Atlanta rotation; Grant Holmes, Spencer Schwellenbach, Reynaldo López, and AJ Smith-Shawver have all landed on the 60-day injured list. Sale’s impending rehab appearance offers a glimmer of hope for a roster that’s been scrambling for consistency.
