Evidently the Jamestown and Cooperstown baseball clubs use to compete for the Leland Cup.

Don’t feel bad, I didn’t know that either.

This was back in 1892 and evidently this competition was a big deal.

In August of 1892, the big game was held in Jamestown with a great deal of celebration. A Jamestown brass band led the baseball team down what is now First Avenue to the ballpark for the game.

Newspaper accounts said the game, which was held on a Monday afternoon, attracted the biggest crowd in Jamestown sports history.

“Scores of ladies were among the spectators and everyone took a lively interest,” wrote The Jamestown Alert.

The Jamestown nine were looking sharp in their black uniforms and everyone was ready for a great time at the ballpark.
