In the coming months, the original Rumson-Sea Bright Bridge will be dismantled, ending a project to replace the aging structure with a new one.
Pieces of it won’t be far away.
They’ll be deep under the sea, not far from the town in which millions of motorists used the bridge to travel between the Jersey Shore and the mainland.
Monmouth County commissioners announced Thursday that concrete from the bridge will be sunk off the coast of Sandy Hook to bolster an artificial reef, a man-made structure intended to mimic natural habitats for sealife. They’ve also been cited as a benefit for divers plunging into the ocean for glimpses of the creatures inhabiting it.
