A woman holding a knife was fatally shot by police in the hallway of a New Brunswick apartment building on Friday morning.
Police responded to the building on Neilson Street after a 911 caller reported that a resident was walking around the hallway with a knife, the state Attorney General’s office said in a statement.
When officers from the New Brunswick Police Department arrived, the woman had returned to her apartment.
Police went to her unit and first spoke to the woman while she was behind the closed door. She later opened the door and came into the hallway still holding the knife, authorities said.
Officers first utilized pepper spray on the woman followed by a conducted energy device, commonly known by the brand name Taser, officials said.
