Newark's Main Street is the beating heart of the city, but after two tragedies on its asphalt within a year of each other, residents and Blue Hens demanded action to make it safer.
Two University of Delaware students were killed by speeding vehicles on Main Street in the last school year. Both vehicles were running from police, who were not in pursuit. However, they both caused the state and city to think more about how to make the street safer.
So, the city and the state are on the same page about the short-term upgrades that could slow drivers further on the one-way business corridor that borders the University of Delaware campus. It's a state road, which means the Delaware Department of Transportation is a partner in the projects.
