USA, — The nation's most beloved wildfire prevention ambassador is celebrating another milestone birthday. Smokey Bear, the iconic figure who has taught Americans about fire safety for more than eight decades, marked his 81st birthday on Saturday.

According to Smokey's website , the bear's journey began in 1944 when the U.S. Forest Service, National Association of State Foresters and the Ad Council joined forces with advertising agency Foote, Cone & Belding to launch the public service campaign.

Artist Albert Staehle created the first poster featuring the now-famous bear, though Smokey's signature catchphrase did not appear until three years later. In 1947, the memorable slogan "Remember... Only YOU Can Prevent Forest Fires" made its debut.
