HUNTSVILLE, Ala. ( WAFF ) - New numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that ultra-processed foods make up over half of children’s diets.

Desiree Walker is a pediatric registered dietitian, and she said that typically ultra-processed foods are the ones that are conveniently packaged. They’re biologically or chemically altered in some way, like soda, pre-packaged snacks, and sweetened breakfast cereals.

Walker told WAFF that ultra-processed foods can make up 60% of what is bought in grocery stores.

She said that these foods tend to be much higher in nutrients that we do not need a lot of, such as salt, fat, and sugar.
