Suleiman Al-Obeid, a former player for the Palestinian national soccer team, was killed by Israeli forces on Wednesday while waiting for humanitarian aid in southern Gaza. He was 41 years old. The Palestinian Football Association (PFA) reported that Al-Obeid was struck by Israeli gunfire targeting individuals in line for aid.

The Israel Defense Forces did not respond to requests for comment regarding Al-Obeid's death. Known by nicknames such as the "Gazelle," "Black Pearl," and the Palestinian "Pele," Al-Obeid was celebrated as a prominent figure in Palestinian soccer. He represented the national team 24 times, scoring two goals, including a notable bicycle kick against Yemen during the 2010 West Asian Federation Cup.

Since October 7, 2023, the PFA has reported that at least 662 athletes and scouts have been killed, with 321 members of the Palestinian soccer community among the deceased. This includes players, coaches, referees, and club officials. Al-Obeid, who was born in Gaza City, is survived by his wife and five children.

The Union of European Football Associations honored Al-Obeid, stating he was "a talent who gave hope to countless children, even in the darkest of times." Al-Obeid began his career at Al-Shati'a Services Club in Gaza before moving to the West Bank, where he played for the Al-Amari Youth Center from 2009 to 2013. He helped his team win the inaugural Palestinian Professional League title in the 2010-2011 season.

After a brief return to Al-Shati'a Services Club, he joined Gaza Sporting Club, where he was the league's top scorer in both the 2015-2016 and 2016-2017 seasons. Al-Obeid's contributions to Palestinian soccer have left a lasting impact on the sport in the region.
