SALISBURY — The Salisbury City Council voted to formalize the city’s intent to purchase the Salisbury Depot on Tuesday, closing in on the negotiated $3.5 million purchase of the 1908 train station.

The city is purchasing the building from the Historic Salisbury Foundation, which has owned the building since purchasing it in 1985 from Norfolk Southern and the N.C. Railroad.

The funding for the purchase and subsequent renovations and improvements is coming from several grants, with the largest being a $11.7 million grant from the federal Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement Program,
