Congratulations to Mary Ellen Stepowany for speaking up for senior citizens and people in wheelchairs or those using walkers in Fells Point ( “Fells Point needs smoother crosswalks,” Aug. 6).
Years ago, my wife, who is since deceased, was in a wheelchair due to multiple sclerosis and pushing her on cobblestones was very difficult. If I wasn’t careful, she could easily fall out of the chair.
When you are young and looking to preserve the historical appearance of Fells Point, you may not consider the importance of easy access. But I dare you to sit yourself in a wheelchair and see how difficult it is to maneuver over the bumpy cobblestones. If restaurants need to be wheelchair accessible so should the streets.
