GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Greensboro Sports Foundation announced Sunday that Jim Melvin, former mayor of Greensboro and the foundation’s chairman, died.
Melvin was credited with driving economic growth in the city by attracting new businesses and fostering a welcoming environment for residents.
In the sports world, he shaped Greensboro’s reputation as “Tournament Town.” He helped establish the Bryan Park Golf Club and the Bryan Park Soccer Complex.
He actively supported the Greater Greensboro Open, guiding the golf tournament’s evolution into today’s Wyndham Championship. Beyond golf, Melvin recruited major sporting events, supported local athletes, and strengthened sports venues throughout Greensboro.
