DECATUR, Ill. (WAND) - Hurricane season may have started June 1st and with storms like Tropical Storm Chantal bringing deadly flooding to the Carolinas, it has seen some devestation already.
However, we have yet to reach peak hurrican season, which is right around the corner.
The tropics typically become more active mid-August through late-November, with September 10th being the official peak for the season.
During this time, sea surface temperatures reach their highest point and can provide enough energy for hurricanes to form and intensify.
This season may be off to a slow start with only four named storms, however, NOAA says they are expecting up to 18 named storms by season's end.
To put this in perspective, a "normal" season would typically only have 14 named storms
