Public school students made big gains in math and reading last year, according to their results on statewide standardized tests.

The percentage of students scoring proficient or better on the English Language Arts exam increased by 7.2 points compared to 2024 — to 56.3%.

Students also saw gains in math, with the percentage of students scoring proficient or better increasing by 3.5 points, to 56.9%.

The tests are given to students in grades three through eight, and the gains come as the city has launched new reading and math curriculum programs across the five boroughs.

"The rise in test scores in both ELA and math is a testament to the hard work by New York City educators and our students," Michael Mulgrew, president of the United Federation of Teachers, said in a statement.
