WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump says he’s placing the D.C. police department under federal control and deploying the National Guard to make the nation’s capital safer. Trump has promised new steps to tackle homelessness and crime in Washington, prompting the city’s mayor to voice concerns about the potential use of the National Guard to patrol the streets.

High level sources in the Wilson Building and the Metropolitan Police Department told WUSA9 that Mayor Muriel Bowser and Police Chief Pamela Smith were not given a heads up about Trump's plan to take over and federalize the police force. They were only preparing for an announcement on the National Guard.

Bowser and Smith addressed reporters Monday saying they will work with federal partners to address crime as they do every day.
