SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- A defense attorney in Onondaga County has agreed to surrender her law license after admitting to professional misconduct by taking taxpayer money she didn't earn.
Court documents obtained by NewsChannel 9 show attorney Marsha Hunt overbilled Onondaga County's assigned counsel program. The taxpayer-funded program estimated the fraudulent amount to be around $160,000.
In Onondaga County, defendants who can't afford their own defense attorney are assigned a private attorney who then bills the work to the Onondaga County Bar Association Assigned Counsel Program, Inc.
Hunt admitted to at least five instances when she billed more than 24 hours for a 24-hour period, including 35 hours of claimed work on November 29, 2022 and 30 hours on April 3, 2023. She was paid f
