Phoenix's first permanent police chief since 2022 has officially stepped into his new role, which he has called a "homecoming."

Matt Giordano's first day as head of the department was Aug. 11, and in a video , he said he was committed to leading with "integrity, humility and transparency" and he believes in a department that "protects and connects."

Giordano began his career in Phoenix. He worked there for 23 years until 2017, when he retired as a commander. He went on to serve as the executive chief of enforcement for the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office under Paul Penzone and then as the executive director of the Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training Board.
