South Carolina state Representative Robert John “R.J.” May III has resigned from office following his indictment on federal charges elated to the possession and distribution of Child Sexual Abuse Material.

May, a Lexington Republican, submitted his resignation to S.C. House Majority Leader David Hoitt. Hoitt had filed a complaint with the House ethics committee in June to start the process of removing May from office.

May's letter said “I have decided that it is in the best interest of my family and constituents to resign immediately from the South Carolina House of Representatives. Please accept this letter as my formal resignation from the South Carolina House of Representatives. It has been an honor to serve the people of District 88.”
