Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. on Monday afternoon asked all customers to conserve energy “immediately” to reduce the chance of widespread power outages, according to a BGE post on social media .

The potential outages are being caused by an “unplanned disconnection” between a power plant and the BGE electric system, according to the utility. The disconnection could cause widespread power outages this afternoon.

BGE is working with the owner of the power plant to make repairs while PJM Interconnection, a regional transmission organization that coordinates the movement of electricity, is evaluating if there is enough power going through BGE’s service area.
