Winamac man identified as deceased in officer-involved shooting
CHESTERTON, Ind. -- The Porter County Prosecutor's Office announced on Monday the officers involved in officer-involved shooting regarding 45-year-old Joseph Gerber, of Winamac, on June 18, acted in self-defense.
Porter County Prosecutor Gary S. German stated Officer Mancera and Lieutenant Virijevich acted in self- defense without question, and that they were not only protecting themselves but also numerous members of the public.
On June 18, police were called to the Hilton Garden Inn in Chesterton for a reported unwanted individual.
The hotel staff reported Gerber had stayed overnight but wasn't a registered guest. They went on to say Gerber had been acting "distant" and had a firearm in his possession
