INDIANAPOLIS -- Two weeks ago, the city served an eviction notice on the two dozen or so homeless campers who had erected tents along Leonard Street south of Virginia Avenue in Fountain Square, telling them that today was the day they had to go.

As of midday, about half of the campers had left, one man said he was packing up a trailer to move into the woods and Angela Merrill was hoping to have keys to a Beech Grove apartment in her hands by nightfall, courtesy of a community group.

” It's gonna feel good to have a home again,” she said. ” It's gonna be a relief because I can begin to get hospice for my brother so he can get his medical treatment and I can make our doctors' appointments because I’m diabetic, get back to doing that regularly, and just start living again.”
