ROCHESTER, Minn. — Rochester residents may see a rise in their utility bills next year as Rochester Public Utilities (RPU) proposes a rate increase.
RPU aims to increase power rates by 6 percent and water rates by 9 percent in both the upcoming year and in 2027. If approved, the average customer could expect to pay an additional $7 to $8 per month.
The proposed rate hikes are intended to fund advanced metering technology, replace aging infrastructure, and assist the city in reaching its clean energy goals by 2030.
The city is also preparing for the end of its contract with the Southern Minnesota Municipal Power Agency in 2030. RPU desires for the city to become self-reliant in power generation.
City Councilman and RPU board member Patrick Keane believes the increases are reasonable whe
