Despite the best efforts of bystanders, a 27-year-old man has drowned in the Vermilion River , Greater Sudbury Police said Monday.

In a release, the police service said officers were dispatched on Aug. 9 to the Vermilion River near Vermilion Falls, near Centennial Park off Municipal Road 55.

Officers were told a group of individuals had been swimming in the area when one man separated from the group and began to struggle while attempting to return.

Bystanders attempted to rescue the man.

“Members of the public who were swimming, kayaking and canoeing nearby attempted to assist the man as he went under the water,” police said. “A community member in a canoe was able to locate the man under the water, jumped in and pulled the man to shore.”
