STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — New York City has released new test score data from state standardized exams showing an increase in reading and math scores compared to last year’s results.

Each year, schools administer state exams in reading and math to students in third through eighth grade. Additionally, students in fifth and eighth grade take science exams.

The 2025 state exams mark the third year students have taken the tests under the Next Generation Learning Standards, which were established following revisions to the Common Core curriculum.

State data shows the overall percentage of students citywide meeting proficiency levels in reading increased by 7.2 points since last year — from 49.1% in 2024 to 56.3% in 2025.
