It appears that one big-time pol who has twice run for president as a Democrat won’t be part of the field for the 2028 White House election.
Democratic socialist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont over the weekend appeared to close the door on another White House campaign.
When asked on CNN whether he would be a candidate for president in 2028, the independent Sanders said, “Let’s not worry about that. I am going to be 84 years of age next month, as a matter of fact.”
Sanders said. “I think that speaks for itself.”
Sanders ran for president twice, in 2016 and 2020, energizing progressive voters across the country.
While sounding like he would not make the race himself, the senator said there would “absolutely” be a candidate in 2028 who could take up his progressive mantle.
